Mama Said There’d Be Days Like These

Ever have one of those days where things just aren’t going your way?! Me too. I’m having one today.

I worked this morning but quickly got burned out so decided I’d take another stab at this web site of mine. I’d never given a lot of thought to the look of my blog until recently when I decided I should update WordPress and find myself a new theme that I felt comfy enough to tweak. I love to dabble, but I don’t kid myself into thinking that I have a mad set of design skills. I’d like to, but don’t really have the time given my work, this blog, the kids, the pets, the husband and let’s not forget the laundry.

I’ve already had trouble with the way things are working which I’m certain is not the fault of the theme creator. My troubles here are entirely my own fault. I should have realized that this theme is XHTML Strict (which means I can’t use target=”blank” for opening new windows for example). Well, I could, but it would show up as validation errors of course. And there are other things I’ve evidently done in tweaking the theme to totally suit me that have caused the footer to not work properly on the internal pages. It’s still not working properly (except on the home page) and I’m still not sure what I’ve done to cause the trouble in the first place.

But I digress. I tend to do that on days like this. So I was feeling a bit burnt out and like I needed something different to do so I stopped doing my work and opened up the blog pages because I’d never got around to finishing some sorta look for the ‘logo’ area of this site. I dabbled together something other than the font. Created a new non-washed background image for the header area and tossed it together the way I thought it would work.

Color me shocked when I actually produced what I’d envisioned. The home page actually had the header image and the clickable logo image all right where I’d wanted it to be. Okay, it actually took a few tweaks in between, but I was feeling as if my day might be looking up. Then I clicked to the other pages of the site and found my day was no better at all.

So, for now, I’m leaving the blog as is — offering my sincerest apologies for the little ticks that need to be fixed — because it’s now time for me to pick the kids up from school and embark on the second half of my day…

  1. Thanks for dropping by my site. I love your blog. I wish I could tweak mine, but…I’m not that computer savy so I generally just go with free wordpress themes.

  2. Your site looks great. I use the free wordpress theme, too. I was able to find one that I really liked, though, so I feel fortunate. It’s in colors I would have chosen and I like the flowers for the header. That’s a good thing because I’m not very computer savy either. lol 🙂

  3. You gotta love wordpress. Over the past couple of years I’ve used two different themes but chose by layout more than anything else. Then I just tweaked them to get font changes, color changes and minor layout changes or features. Both of you have really nice sites!

Kim’s blog uses a really nice teal mixed with gray. Check out Life with Kim.
Charla’s uses a pretty blue background with a flowered header. I actually remember the yellow flower header from the first time I ever visited your site. I love yellows and blues (and shades of gray obviously). Check out Healthy Home Blog.

And thank you both for the comments!
